SPARK-II is a dual-VCO Fractional-N PLL synthesizer solution which supports IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n. With its low rms phase error (0.8° rms) and its low power consumption, it is an ideal solution for fast time-to-market designs. The design is in 65nm low power technology and entails the complete PLL synthesizer with its integrated loop filter as well as the crystal oscillator. The design supports all crystals from 26 MHz to 52 MHz with very low ppm drift over process corners and well-contained crystal drive levels for best long-term frequency stability of the crystal. Some additional features of the design include the support of two different noise shaping functions as well as a lock detector and automatic frequency calibration of each of the two VCOs. Two modes of charge pump linearization methods are supported for first-time success. The design has additional testability features to integrate with customer’s SPI structures. Design re-programmability allows multiple loop filter settings and multiple current settings for all analog components. This enables system designers to combat process variations by intelligent calibration methods as well re-optimize power consumption. The design comes with three LDOs to enable operation from supplies up to 3.3V.
